Transfer Innsbruck Obergurgl

A transfer Innsbruck Obergurgl is a journey through the Ötztal “Ötz Valley” and takes us back into the Stone Age.Ötztal Oetztal

Obergurgl is one undisputed among the best known and most popular destinations for skier from all over the world. Rather unknown is that the village of Obergurgl is only part of the municipality of Sölden. But it is settled 1927 meters above sea level and therefore adorns itself as the village with the highest located church in Austria.

Traces of first human settlement in Obergurgl extend back to approximately 7,500 BC.
The name “Gurgl” was first mentioned in 1250 and is derived from the old German word “Gurgall”, and can be translated with  “place in the glacier rim”.

But before the clear winter sun which is reflected by ice-blue mountain peaks makes us put on our sun glasses we still have a romantic journey through the longest side valley of the Inn valley ahead of us.

On our transfer Innsbruck Obergurgl we pass five climate zones over a distance of 65 km

From cornfields to the eternal ice at the Rettenbach Glacier

We left the Inn valley motorway and reach the entrance at Oetztal train station into the valley. Now we are at 670 meters above sea level. The Ötztal Road B 186 leads us through the five levels of the valley, which are separated by canyons and narrows. In the first basin we reach the Ötz village with its approximately 2,300 inhabitants at the foot of the 3,000 meter high Acher Kogel.
Especially agriculture benefits from the particularly mild climate.  Most of the residents are farmers who gain an extra income by letting out apartments or running a hotel.

Summer & Winter: Ötz is always worth a visit

Piburger See / Lake

Piburger See / Piburger Lake

The striking mountain scenery attracts hikers, mountain bikers and climbers from all over the world during the summer and autumn. A popular destination is the Piburger lake whose deep blue water is bordered by dark green forest.

However, the focus of tourism here is on skiers and snowboarders who come to the ski resort Hochoetz – Kühtai. Lifting in Kühtai and fun on the slopes in Hochoetz have been linked and became new ski resort Kühtai – Hochoetz. Both ski areas are connected with one ski pass! A free shuttle bus cruises every half an hour between Hochoetz (Ochsengarten) and Kühtai.

Umhausen All-in-One: Health cure, Stuiben waterfall, Stone Age

After only 10 minutes drive southwards we reach the second section of the valley of the Ötztal and enter the city limit of the at first sight inconspicuous village of Umhausen. It is considered the oldest permanent settlement in the valley.  Winter sports enthusiasts will only remember Umhausen as a transit village. But there are numerous reasons for a stay.

  • Kurzentrum Umhausen – Health Spa Umhausen
The rounded shapes of the Spa  building, which are held in deep orange, can be seen afar from the road. The presence of radon water is used for anodyne treatment and relief is availed in rheumatic diseases.
  • Stuibenfall – Tyrol’s highest waterfall. Umhausen is also a popular starting point for a hike to Tirol’s highest waterfall. It is fed by melt water and therefore in the summer it runs its largest water management. After two years of construction a steel structure with 728 steps and an 80-meter-long suspension bridge was opened to the viewing platforms in May 2016.
  • Ötzi – the man in the ice.  Since the discovery of the man in the ice – named Ötzi – in 1991, the Ötztal has been enriched by a cultural sensation. The world-famous discovery of the 4th millennium BC. has become an archaeological signpost for the whole Ötz valley region, and as the name of the glacier mummy says, is irrevocably connected with this valley and its mountains. A visit to the Ötzi village takes us back to the Stone Age and gives us a deep insight into the lives of our ancestors.

Längenfeld and the Aqua Dome

Continuing our transfer Innsbruck Obergurgl we left Umhausen behind us and drive 9 km along the Ötztaler Ache. Now we reach Längenfeld, the largest community in the valley.

Until the 20th century flax cultivation was the main source of income for citizens of Längenfeld. This industry died out eventually and was replaced by tourism. While Längenfeld does not have a ski resort of its own, the proximity to the famous ski areas Sölden – Hochsölden and Obergurgl – Hochgurgl make the place for winter sports extremely attractive. The numerous hotels, guesthouses and apartments in particular score with much more favorable rates compared with the hotspot Sölden.

Längenfeld became famous, in 1830 by its thermal springs, which were developed about  60 years later by tourism pioneers to a spa. In the 1960s, however, the source dried up due to drainage projects.

In 1997 a deep drilling down to almost 1,900 m was able to tap the 68 degree hot spring again. The water is now officially recognized as medicinal water. Every year approximately 350,000 visitors enjoy the Aquadome with its relaxing and healing effect.

Sölden – the village of superlatives

Driving further into the Ötztal we eventually climb up to 1370 m above sea level. Sölden says the city entrance sign.  We have arrived in a community that impresses with extraordinary measures.

Sölden is Austria’s largest area community of which 146 m² is covered by glaciers and only 1% is established as municipal area.
Only around 3,200 inhabitants manage more than 2.1 mil. overnight stays per year.  Sölden and winter tourism are inextricably linked. The main part of the ski area is located at 2,000 meters above sea level on the Rettenbach and Tiefenbach Glacier. The place is the venue for the annual FIS Ski World Cup.

From Hitchcock to James Bond 007 – Sölden is world famous

Even for non-skiers Sölden is not unknown.
1926 Alfred Hitchcock visited Sölden and Obergurgl to use the mountain scenery for his move “The Mountain Eagle”. The film is considered lost and is, according to the British Film Institute the most searched film in the world.

The” Berghof” located slightly above Sölden was the filming location for “The Geierwally” in 1940.

The highlight of Sölden’s “film history” was during the winter 2014/2015. The Ice Q restaurant at the Gaislachkogl was the location for thrilling scenes in the James Bond movie “Spectre”. Get some cool pics here.

Obergurgl – Hochgurgl – Diamond in the Alps

We leave Sölden behind us and move on to the final stage of our transfer Innsbruck Obergurgl through the Ötztal. At least now we are grateful to have chosen a taxi which has a powerful four-wheel drive. Ahead of us are 14 steep kilometers on a winding road which can turn into an impossible hurdle for an inexperienced driver during the winter month.

About 20 minutes later a winter white glittering jewel arises in front of us: Obergurgl, the Diamond of the Alps, bordered in up to 3,500 m high mountain peaks with snow-covered slopes. Snow safety until April, a stunning mountain scenery and gastronomy on the highest quality level attract over 85,000 guests every year.

Top Mountain Crosspoint

Since April 2016, the famous ski resort offers an additional attraction.
At the opening of the Top Mountain Crosspoint in Hochgurgl the new 10-person gondola at Kirchenkar was put into operation. The base station of the modern cable car system is integrated in the multifunctional complex. It also includes a cafeteria, the toll station of the Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road and the highest motorcycle museum in Europe.

Besides our transfer Innsbruck Obergurgl we also offer transfers to the other places in the Ötztal:
