Pitztaler Gletscher

Flooding from the glacier ice lake caused repeatedly major damage to the villages surrounding the Glacier. During hundreds of years people tried to appease the forces of nature resident inside the glacier with annual processions and a chapel that was built within the eternal ice.

Today this water flowing through pipes feeds the Gepatsch reservoir.

Highest glacier in Tyrol

Pitztal Glacier is called „the roof of Tyrol“ and combines superlatives. The glacier area is dominated by the 3768 meter high Wildspitze and is with 10 km² the second largest in Austria. Overall, the glacier stretches between an altitude of 1640 m up to 3440 m. From there rises the River „Pitze“ which gives the valley its name.

The Pitztal Glacier lift

With the opening of the Pitztal glacier lift in 1983 the ski area started to become widely known and tourism became the main source of income for the Population of the Pitztal. One of the main attractions is the Rifflsee a glacier lake situated at 2200 meters. This is a very popular destination especially in summer for walkers. However most tourists come during winter season.

A skiing holiday within the relatively small ski resort is an experience for itself. Compared to the major ski resorts in Tyrol it is rather less frequented, manageable, quiet and friendly. Hotels are almost all family run giving tourists the opportunity to get contact with the rustic – friendly, well-focused population of Tyrol.
